Understanding Project Management

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Last Updated: 8/15/2024

There are entire books and certifications devoted to this topic. And this is great for discussing generalities. This is a topic that can be applied for a number of purposes: Constructing a new building; Deploying a project; Deploying a new service. When doing your research you might note that the Army tends to focus on the Metric side of things. To make matters more complicated not every project is tracked or ran the same. However there are going to be a lot of commonalities which you should be familiar with.

We are going to talk about phrases like PMO, Stakeholders, BA, Project Charter; Decision Records; Lessons Learned. We are going to talk about Risk.

Certification:

The Project Management Institute (PMI) sponsors the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, which is a globally recognized credential that demonstrates a project manager’s ability to lead projects in any industry. The PMI is considered the world’s leading authority on project management and also publishes the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK), which is a key resource for project management concepts

The above paragraph is entirely written by Google AI; So yeah, I am giving credit where credit is due. 🙂

Exam Cost: As of July 2024, the exam fee was $575 for non-PMI members and $405 for PMI members. A PMI membership was $159 a year, making the exam slightly cheaper with a membership

Questions: The exam is a 180 question exam.

Requirement: 35 hours of training. I am going to straight up reference Coursera’s comment that Google offers training:  Google Project Management: Professional Certificate (I am leaving the link alone; Googles own site references training with coursera links. Please note there are references to Udemy below (random choice). There are a number of books on Amazon referencing PMP exam certification and flash cards.

Now, The above might need amending. I am not a PMO. But that doesn’t mean everybody doesn’t need a little PMO in them in order to get from point a, to point b.
